Who Was The First Queen To Get A Brazilian? | QI
It's especially interesting to me because my family's other language is Gaelic (Scottish) which has no literal yes/no words. The closest they come is basically "to be" or "not to be" (tha/cha in the present tense.) Yet the sounds of acknowledgement and disagreement here would still be understood.
Similar intake of breath while saying ‘yih’ is what I experienced in working with Norwegians in the Stavanger / Kristiansand (S) area.
Alan Davis may have a small penis but he is such a good sport.
The other thing about hotwiring is that it's permanent. Once hotwired you can't ever start the car again with the key, you have to keep hotwiring it every time. It can be worked on but it would be pretty bold of a thief to turn up at a mechanic's with a stolen car and say "can you rewire the car so that the keys work again?" Not to mention you wouldn't have the keys anyway because if you did you wouldn't need to hotwire it.
Don't Greeks click and look up when they say no?

I didn’t realise all this time that Benny Hill wasn’t a comedian, he was just an albino African.
'yes' and 'no' are sometimes not-so-Universal (a "thumbs up" is Positive in most countries, but considered a Threat in others, for example) but the sound of Not Knowing ("Huh?") is...
I feel like a sound with an upward inflection denotes positivity, or a yes; while a downward inflection implies negativity, or a no. I feel the same can be said for positive or negative movements or facial expressions. Such as a smile with arms spread is a positive welcoming message, while a frown or stern look with arms brought in is a guarding expression; denoting yes or no, respectively. However, I'm not well-traveled at all. So, I could be completely wrong.
Uh-huh and a-ah are a pretty universal Yes and No, though the former is more often used as a form of sarcastic scepticism when someone's telling you something and you really do not beleive it at all... :P
It's more complicated that stand or sit. There is also wipe front to back or back to front, or ... Circular. 🇨🇦
I am Perplexed, huh I figured sit down v standing wipe, was a guy v gal thing! Butt ;p I heard alot of deeper voices/masculine? in that sit down audience cheer--huh?!!! bidet for me, of course it brings up alot of resentment when meeting people for the first time, cause my question is how you like your bidet? huh, what was that? oh hell no! Get those grubby mitts away from me! ewwww Grrrr... ;p
I’m sick of seeing non British comedians here. Get eddie off
He knew how to behave on QI. Not like the useless Rich Hall
I lived in Ethiopia and they do the 'inhale' for "yes" but another thing they do is say 'ish'. So for awhile, as they were talking and they did that, I thought they were shushing me so I'd stop talking.
My understanding is that in Bangladesh, "yes" is wobbling your head side-to-side. (In looking it up, it seems that it's regional to South Asia.)
Yea. It's something I noticed years ago. We used to live near a bunch of Indians
I just want to point out, as a jew: we do not preserve the foreskins of babies after they had been circumcised. I understand Catholic Christians may have been somewhat confused about this issue.
In some regions in Bulgaria and Albania shaking your head no means yes and nodding your head yes means no.
That’s what I heard. Some Indians also kind of bob their heads side to side for a yes.
That had to form as a weird anomaly. It's so rare.
reading that hurt my wittle brain
Why is Stephen Fry's tie wearing a tie?
Because of Balkan mercinaries in 1600s France.
The only show where this answer makes sense @@titanuranus3095

Clarkson shouting a grunty YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!
I despair of a real Clarkson Island, on which labour-averse, elkish children are convinced of their genius, and refuse to get bogged down with who is supposed to do what, etc.
@@danmayberry1185...in the world
In India, the head nod for yes is often interpreted by tourists as a no.
There might be western influence too. Most cultures nowadays have abandoned their traditional clothing in favor of t-shirts, jeans, suits and ties, and they also adopt gestures like handshakes, v-signs and shrugs.
"he did, i hated it" awesome.
Isn't there a singular village in Sweden where they use this reversed fricative to say yes?
Stephen was a bit off. ua-cam.com/video/URgdIAz4QNg/v-deo.html
No
Certainly in mammals, there’s a lot of similarities in saying yes and no.
It's quite easy to say "I don't know" without words. Just go uhuhuh with the h silent and the middle uh higher pitched than the first and last, and the last one slightly rising in pitch at the very end! To start, keep saying I dunno, and blend it together. Now yer getting it!
Without looking it up, assuming you don't know, guess whether o-o in Filipino is yes or no. 👇
Didn’t ask
Yes. No is hinde.
So the answer is... "Uhah"?
Y'all should do one on onomatopoeias, especially for animal sounds. It's insane how many are similar and which cultures have created more accurate depictions than our own.
Yep. In Turkey (well, maybe not all over, I was teaching in Istanbul) dogs say "how! how!" and donkeys are backwards, they say "naw nee, naw nee".
@@cijmo I accidentally discovered this in Lithuania while walking by a farm with a teammate who couldn't speak English. I jokingly made a cow sound, and he kinda laughed. Then I did a cat sound, and he did the same. But then I did a pig sound, and his eyes opened up as he then made the sound he would use. Then all hell broke loose as we thought of every animal in the world. Then we moved on to knocking on doors etc. That 30 minute walk would've sucked without that amazing moment 🤣
@@JonSanders Humour brings people together. I don't know if you remember Lonely Planet but the host, Ian was good at loosening people up. He was traveling through what had been the USSR and the people were still shy and reserved. He was on a train and he broke the ice by showing his passport and laughing at the picture then encouraged everyone do do the same with their ID cards. They were just all pointing and laughing.
There's a suburb in Australia called Tootgarook, as the local indigenous folk said that's the sound frogs in the area make.
@@bymysidebrits1701Frogs in our first nation language of Cree say "aheek"
that was the worst "schuup Yes" i've ever heard, i think
I have heard worse from drunken (swedish) university students in Umeå, but they and Stephen were far off the scale in different directions.
Yeah, it was way too high pitched.
The sound should be like when you for a quarter of a second suck up water through a hose, but you have forgotten the hose.
Certainly, roundabout there.
Mmm/Mmhmm. I feel like that's likely to be a constant - just from what I've seen in media. I've never been outside my home country though, so I could be wrong

No such thing as ghosts? Tell that to the poor woman who is STILL being RAPED by a ghost in america. Portrayed by a film called ENTITY. Based on a true story.
What utter rubbish, lasers were bounced off of the moon in 1958 before any robots placed a reflector. USA did it and the Russians copied them a couple of years later. The module engine was still on as it landed as the audio recording shows on Nasa`s own news page. The big thing about flag is not the moment but close up shots showed it wet. How, in a vacuum no moisture and it should have either steamed away or frozen if in shade. People need to explore the facts out there. Feel free as usual, the sheep will insult me and put me down, I dont care, I wont follow the garbage the government ask us to believe!. Hasselblad camera with hexichrome film run by two varta batteries in the same temp as you oven? Film would have curled up and been useless and the batteries would be dead or explode. All without the radiation, Photonic, Gamma etc that would ruin film but every pic came out clear lol yeah right.
there js a lot of debate about what oficially counts as the end of ww2, a surrender doesnt ingerently mean the war has ended
Jeez Fry's lucky not to be drooling on the desk! Listen to him sucking wind though his teeth after every sentence!!🤣That busted clubbed foot in the middle of his face gives him no air at all!!😅😂
Mother Nature isn't daft, all body parts have to be attached so they are the length needed. Case in point being our own legs, they are the right size to fill the gap between ankle and bum. For about the first 18 years of life bums rise a little day by day and the leg fairies swap them for longer legs while we sleep.
8.25 😂
Spanish sailor Pedro Serrano was marooned on an island in the 16th century (1520) and after 3 years, another man was marooned there after his ship ENTIRELY sank off the reef overnight.😕 So to Pedro's way of thinking, the man materialized out of thin air. 😮 Both men thought the other was Satan incarnate and chased each other around this atoll quoting bible verses at each other to PROVE they were human. 😂 It was 4 more years before they were rescued. Serrano didn't survive the voyage home. 😮💨
To be fair, when all you have left is to fall, then how you fall makes all the difference.
